Barnardo's Cygnet Course (Primary) - East

Outline

The Cygnet Course is designed for parents and carers of primary aged children (4-11 years) with an autistic spectrum condition. We would encourage a member of staff from the young person’s school to accompany the parents and carers on the course.

Description

The Cygnet course is delivered over six, three hour sessions which work towards behaviour management and covers a number of topics:

  • Autism & diagnosis
  • Communication
  • Sensory Issues
  • Understanding behaviour
  • Managing behaviour

Outcomes

The course is designed to:
  • increase parents understanding of autistic spectrum conditions
  • help parents develop their knowledge on how a child on the autistic spectrum experiences the world and what drives their behaviour
  • guide parents through practical strategies they can use with children
  • direct parents to relevant ASC resources
  • give parents the opportunity to meet with other parents who have had similar experiences and to gain support and learn from each other

Booking Information

This programme is presented quite informally in suitably sized groups. There will be two trainers presenting and at least one of these will be an advisory teacher from the Autism and Communication Service. A commitment is required that you will be able to attend the 6 sessions. Sessions will start promptly at 10 am.

This course is fully funded to parents and a member of the school staff.

Please apply for this course via your school SENCO or PFSA who will have to complete a Cygnet for Parent Referral Form - a diagnosis of autism is required or attendance with the agreement of your child's paediatrician.

Audience

Parents whose children have a diagnosis of autism. This course is intended for the parents of children aged 4-9 years and places are also available to staff members in a supporting role.
