Foundation Degree Learning and Development from Early Years to Adolescence (0-19)

Somerset Centre for Integrated Learning (SCIL) offers Foundation Degrees in partnership with the University of Worcester.

Outline

Our two year Foundation Degree is designed for those who wish to gain a higher level qualification in working with children and young people from the ages 0-19 years.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to gain an academic practice based qualification if you are working in the children and young people’s workforce.

Description

This Foundation Degree is ideal for those working in Children's Social Care, the getset services, early years, play work, youth work, Youth Offending Team, a Pupil Referral Unit or as a childminder. The degree is delivered one day a week either during the day or a twilight session during term time.

During the first year you will cover the following modules:
  • Introduction to study skills
  • Reflective journal
  • Safeguarding and well-being of children and young people 0 - 19
  • Introduction to the development of children and young people
  • Enabling environments: characteristics of effective learning
  • Practice based enquiry.

The second year will cover:
  • Being a reflective thinker and learner
  • Supporting the social and emotional development and learning of children and young people (0 to 19 years) (double module)
  • Exploring quality provision
  • Enabling Environments 0 to 19: Meeting individual needs
  • Promoting Positive Learning Behaviours
  • Practice based enquiry (double module).

Entry requirements:

Mature students (over 21 years If you do not have formal qualifications a non-standard entry route is available).

Under 21 years Passes A-C in four GCSE subjects plus one A level at grade C or equivalent points (e.g. 2 AS levels at grade D).


Applicants must have current experience of working in an education setting. A Disclosure and Baring Service check is required for this course.

All successful applications will be invited to attend a selection day prior to the start of the course. This gives you an opportunity to meet tutors, other students and find out more information about the course. You will be asked to prepare a short piece of writing prior to the session and you will be required to participate in a group discussion.
